To keep the potion going, she hired a young servant boy named Gwion Bach. On the last day, just as the brew was nearly complete, three drops of the potion flew out and landed on Gwion’s thumb. Instinctively, he licked it—and boom! All the knowledge and wisdom meant for her son transferred to him.
Yikes.
Knowing he was in trouble, Gwion fled. Cerridwen, furious, chased him through a series of shapeshifting transformations—he turned into a hare, she became a greyhound; he turned into a fish, she a otter; a bird, then a hawk. Finally, he transformed into a grain of wheat, and she became a hen and ate him.
She later gave birth to him (yep, reborn!) as Taliesin, who would grow up to become the greatest poet and bard in Welsh legend.
